The rule in Oman

SituationWage usedFormulaLaw
You take annual leaveGross wageGross ÷ 30 × leave daysArt. 78
Your service ends with days leftGross wageGross ÷ 30 × days leftArt. 81
Days cashed in while you keep workingBasic wage, only with your written consentBasic ÷ 30 × daysArt. 81

The gross wage is the basic wage plus all the allowances paid for your work, such as housing and transport (Article 1(18)). A month is 30 days in the law (Article 1(24)), so a day's wage is the monthly wage ÷ 30.

Example: basic OMR 300, housing OMR 100, transport OMR 50, so the gross wage is OMR 450. You leave the job with 18 days of leave left: 450 ÷ 30 = OMR 15 a day, × 18 = OMR 270. If the same 18 days were cashed in while you kept working, with your written consent: 300 ÷ 30 × 18 = OMR 180.

The common mistake: leave paid on basic

Many pages still say unused leave is paid on the basic wage. That was the old law of 2003 (Article 64). The 2023 Labour Law pays the balance left at the end of service on the gross wage (Article 81). Basic is used only when the employer pays out days during your service and you agree in writing.

Sources (checked October 2026): Royal Decree 53/2023, the Oman Labour Law (English, decree.om), The official Arabic text (qanoon.om), Oman Observer: leave under the old law (Articles 61 and 64, 2021), decree.om blog: leave under Oman's Labour Law. Laws change, and the ministry or a court gives the final figure.

So agreeing to cash in leave while you are still working costs you the allowances on those days. Taking the leave, or leaving it in your balance until the job ends, pays the gross wage.

Annual leave earned for part of a year

The law gives at least 30 days a year but does not say how part years build up. The usual practice, and this calculator, is 30 × days of service ÷ 365:

ServiceLeave earned
6 months (182 days)14.96 days
9 months (273 days)22.44 days
1 year30 days
18 months (547 days)44.96 days
2 years60 days

Example: joined 1 March 2025, leaving on 31 December 2025 with no leave taken. That is 306 days of service, so 30 × 306 ÷ 365 = 25.15 days. On a gross wage of OMR 600 they are worth 20 × 25.15 = OMR 503.01.

Questions

Is leave salary in Oman paid on basic or gross salary?

It depends on when. Leave you take is paid on the gross wage (Article 78). A leave balance left when your service ends is paid on the gross wage too (Article 81). Only days the employer pays out while you keep working, with your written consent, are paid on the basic wage.

How is leave encashment calculated in Oman?

When the job ends: gross monthly wage ÷ 30 × the days left. A gross wage of OMR 450 with 18 days left gives OMR 270. The law takes a month as 30 days (Article 1(24)).

How many days of annual leave do I get in Oman?

At least 30 days a year on the gross wage (Article 78). Your contract can give more, never less.

Can I take annual leave before 6 months in Oman?

No. Article 78 says leave is not taken before 6 months of service with the employer.

How many leave days can I carry forward in Oman?

You may keep a balance of up to 30 days, unless you could not take your leave because of the needs of the work (Article 78). The employer may postpone your leave by at most 6 months, and you must take at least 30 days once every 2 years (Article 81).

Are the 30 days working days or calendar days?

The law only says 30 days. It does not say working days. Check your contract, and enter your balance as your employer counts it.

Can my employer pay me instead of giving me leave?

Only if you agree in writing, and then on the basic wage (Article 81). You cannot give up your leave (Article 78).

Is unused leave paid if I resign in Oman?

Yes. Article 81 pays the balance on the gross wage whenever your service ends, whoever ends it.

Do I get a ticket for my annual leave?

A non-Omani worker gets the return ticket to their country for leave that the contract gives (Article 78). Check your contract.
