Annual leave rules in Kuwait
| Rule | What the law says | Law |
|---|---|---|
| Days a year | At least 30 working days, paid | Art. 70 (Law 85/2017) |
| First leave | After 6 months of service; part years in proportion | Art. 70 |
| Not counted inside leave | Weekly rest days, public holidays, sick days | Art. 70 |
| Pay | Paid before the leave starts | Art. 71 |
| Building up leave | Up to 2 years; more only if both sides agree | Art. 72 |
| Cash during the job | Not allowed | Art. 74 |
| Cash when the contract ends | For all the leave built up | Art. 73 |
Before 2017 the law said 30 days after 9 months. Law 85/2017 changed it to 30 working days after 6 months, so pages that still say "30 calendar days" are out of date.
Why divide by 26 days?
Article 67 says the worker's rights, "including his daily wage and his leave", are worked out by dividing the salary by the actual working days, without the weekly rest days. A month has about 26 working days with one rest day a week, so a day's wage is the monthly wage ÷ 26. Some employers divide by 30, which pays about 13% less per day. The form lets you compare both.
A full year of leave on ÷ 26 is worth more than a month's wage: 30 working days × wage ÷ 26 = 1.154 months. On KWD 600 that is KWD 692.308, against KWD 600.000 on ÷ 30.
Cash for unused days when you leave is often called leave encashment. In Kuwait it is due for all the leave you built up when the contract ends (Article 73).
Worked example: a typed balance
Wage KWD 600 (basic 450, housing 100, transport 50), 12 unused working days: 600 ÷ 26 = KWD 23.077 a day, × 12 = KWD 276.923.
Worked example: leaving mid-year
Wage KWD 600. Joined 1 January 2023, last day 30 June 2026. 20 days left from earlier years, 10 taken since 1 January 2026.
- This service year runs from 1 January 2026: 181 days × 30 ÷ 365 = 14.88 days.
- Balance: 20 + 14.88 − 10 = 24.88 days.
- Leave salary: 24.88 × 600 ÷ 26 = KWD 574.078.
Leave earned by months of service
| Service in the year | Leave earned | Worth on KWD 400 | Worth on KWD 800 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 months (182 days) | 14.96 days | KWD 230.137 | KWD 460.274 |
| 9 months (273 days) | 22.44 days | KWD 345.205 | KWD 690.411 |
| 12 months (365 days) | 30 days | KWD 461.538 | KWD 923.077 |
The calculator counts each service year from your joining date and uses days ÷ 365. Under 6 months of service it shows no figure, because the law gives the first leave after 6 months.

Questions
How is leave salary calculated in Kuwait?
Monthly wage ÷ 26 × your unused leave days. Article 67 of the Labour Law works out a day's wage by dividing the salary by the actual working days, without the weekly rest days, which gives 26 in a month. A wage of KWD 600 with 12 days left gives KWD 276.923.
How many days of annual leave do I get in Kuwait?
At least 30 working days a year, paid (Article 70 as amended by Law 85/2017). Weekly rest days, public holidays and sick days that fall inside your leave do not count against it.
Is annual leave in Kuwait 30 calendar days or 30 working days?
30 working days since Law 85/2017. Many pages still say 30 calendar days, which was the 2010 wording. With Friday off, 30 working days is about 5 calendar weeks.
When do I get my first annual leave in Kuwait?
After 6 months of service (Article 70 as amended; it was 9 months before 2017). Leave for part of a year counts in proportion, the first year included.
Can I take cash instead of annual leave in Kuwait?
Not while you are employed. Article 74 says a worker may not give up annual leave, with or without payment. Cash is paid only for the leave you built up, when the contract ends (Article 73).
How much leave can I carry forward in Kuwait?
Up to 2 years of leave (Article 72). More is allowed only if you and the employer both agree.
Is leave salary in Kuwait paid on basic or total salary?
Article 55 counts everything paid periodically (allowances, increments, bonuses) as wage, and Article 62 uses the last wage. So this calculator uses the total regular wage. Some employers pay on basic only; check your contract.
Is leave pay paid before the leave in Kuwait?
Yes. Article 71 says the wage for the annual leave is paid before the leave starts.
